ASK Italian was established in 1993 at Bolton Middlebrook Retail Park in Bolton, Greater Manchester by brothers Adam Kaye and Samuel Kaye. ASK Italian entered the sub-market of London’s stock exchange, AIM, and they signed several deals by 2004.

The company then collaborated with Pizza Express leading to the establishment of Gondola Holdings of the Gondola Group which was also a popular restaurant chain. Well-known investment company Bridgepoint Capital took over ASK Italian and another popular Italian restaurant chain Zizzi in 2015. The price of the deal was estimated to be around £250 million.

In 2008, ASK Italian collaborated with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity to donate £1 for every kid’s menu sold during the campaign, and by asking customers to add a £1 donation to their bill and in just a few weeks they raised £73,000. In 2012, ASK Italian published its first cookbook which offers different Italian recipes they serve in the restaurant.

ASK Italian faced losses in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic. They have to close all the restaurants in the UK due to the new lockdown rules imposed by the government. Following the pandemic, ASK Italian and Zizzi announced 75 restaurants will be closed leading to job loss of around 1200 people. The chief executive of Azzurri Group stated that the pandemic severely affected their dining sector.

He continued and said that due to the loss they have to take some difficult decisions and had to permanently shut down a few of their restaurants. A few other restaurant chains also announced the closure of a few outlets which left around 3000 employees jobless.
