History of Keens Steakhouse
The journey of Keens Steakhouse started with the churchwarden pipes. The pipes were thin and fragile so it was not so easy to take them inside a bag. For a very long time, pipe smoking was a favorite hobby of the public and a new tradition at Keens Steakhouse started in the 20th century.
The pipes were originally from the Netherlands and thousands of them were brought every year. The pipes were immediately taken to the storage and one of the employees returned them to the patrons who were the original owners.
The Pipe Club of Keens Steakhouse had a long list of members and the place was also associated with the theatre and literary group Lambs Club. Albert Keen then joined the company and Keens Chophouse was officially launched in 1885.
The place became popular in a short period and until the time they were in their 20th year, customers were able to have a glimpse of the pipe room where there were followers who used to follow producers, newspapermen, and publishers.
They have a Bullmoose Room and its name was inspired by President Theodore Roosevelt. This is followed by a Lambs Room which features a collection of pictures of actors who used to work at the time of Shakespeare.
There are two more rooms – Lillie Langrty and Lincoln. The former’s name is taken from Lillie Langtry, the first lady customer of the place, and the other is inspired by Abraham Lincoln.
