History of Boloco
The restaurant started its journey with the title of The Wrap and their first restaurant was launched in 1997. They then decided to take over another restaurant business and they were renamed The Wrap and Smoothie Bar.
They collaborated with a juice company called Jera’s Juice and they continued to launch more restaurants in other places.
The founders planned to expand the franchise to other spots. The company was sold to a few entrepreneurs and the name was later changed to Boloco in 2005. The reason was that the original title seemed like something that refers to a thing that has been already packed for sale.
They established a few more spots in the U.S. by 2006 but the Boston founders changed the name of their locations to Currito. Coincidentally, both franchises had a few items on the menu that were almost the same but they have been operating separately without being linked to each other.
Boloco then launched six more spots in Boston by 2007 and also in Concord, Burlington, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
While a controlling stake of their company was purchased by Winona Capital Management and the company had to suffer losses worth millions despite that 22 locations were operating by 2014.
A few of their locations had to be shut down by 2016 and only ten locations remained by that time. They were certified B Corp at the same time and one of their locations in Harvard Square had to be shut down in 2017 after it operated for more than 10 years.
