A Little History of Mandarin Restaurant

Mandarin Restaurant Menu everymenuprices

Mandarin Restaurant was founded in 1979 by James Chiu, George Chiu, K. C. Chang, and Diana Chiu, who had many years of restaurant experience in Montreal and New York City.

Together, they moved to Ontario, Canada, in 1979 and purchased a small restaurant with Chinese-Canadian décor on Queen Street in Brampton, Ontario, named “Mandarin.” At the time of purchase, Mandarin operated only as a small à-la-carte restaurant.

In 1987, Mandarin began to franchise by allowing its existing employees to become franchise partners.

To become a franchisee, a candidate must have worked for at least one year at one of the company’s restaurants and graduated from the Management Apprenticeship Program at the corporate headquarters.

The restaurant was later increased to three times its original size. As of now, Mandarin Restaurant has 29 locations across Southern Ontario and employs approximately over 2,500 people.

With appetizers starting at $5 and main courses averaging $10-15 based on selections from the Mandarin Restaurant menu, culinary discoveries await. No visit is complete without trying the following items:

1. General Tso’s Chicken (white meat)

A classic comfort food, pieces of juicy chicken are dipped in a light tempura batter and tossed in a sweet, tangy plum sauce spiked with dried chilies. The crispy exterior gives way to tender chicken infused with the flavors of the sauce.

2. Sesame Chicken

Bite-sized morsels of chicken breast are fried to a crisp golden brown and then coated in an addictive sesame paste rich with roasted nutty sesame seeds. Each piece is a burst of flavors and textures that lingers deliciously on the palate.

3. Beef with Broccoli

Tender beef and green broccoli florets are sautéed in a savory brown sauce, basking the vegetables and meat in aromatic warmth. Each component retains a bite while absorbing the complex, layered flavors.

4. Sweet and Sour Pork

Chunks of pork are deep-fried to a succulent melt-in-the-mouth texture before being embedded in a sweet, tangy mélange of pineapple, peppers, and onions. A refreshing mix of flavors and textures in every harmonious bite.

5. Shrimp with Lobster Sauce

Plump shrimp are stir-fried lively with mushrooms and broccoli in a creamy and complex sauce boasting an umami depth from shellfish. Satisfying and decadent with each spoonful.

6. Wonton Soup

Thin parcels of ground pork and shrimp nestled in a clear broth seasoned with ginger and green onions. Light yet nourishing to the soul.

7. Moo Shu Chicken (4 Pancakes)

Shredded chicken, mushrooms, and vegetables are sautéed with a savory sauce and served alongside warm pancakes to craft your hand rolls. Fun, sharing, and endlessly versatile.
